Photographs: Hunters Point Shipyard

All of the photographs in this series were taken at various locations within Hunters Point Shipyard beginning in the spring of 2010. The textures, colors, and vivid contrasts present in the richly layered strata of industrial and marine decay at the shipyard are fascinating, and provide an endless palette for artistic experimentation and improvisation. Using digital tools, I experiment with colors, hues, saturation, contrast, exposure, and composition to create the final images. The photos reveal both the beauty of these strictly aesthetic elements, and at the same time carry a historical weight and a narrative of this unique and fascinating place. This environment, once home to an intense, bustling, bristling industrial war machine, now lies silent and largely vacant, slowly disintegrating as it awaits transformation into its next life. I hope the photographs capture a sense of that place and history, and can function as a record of this unique moment in the Shipyard’s history.
